TRAVERSE CITY — 400 batches of beer, over $25,000 raised for the local community and one year in a new location. Right Brain Brewery celebrated this and more at its SoForever event on Saturday.

The brewery has expanded in a variety of ways since it moved nearly a year ago to its new location in the SoFo district in Traverse City. While still brewing from its seven barrel system, Right Brain is now producing beer for 80% of the state, including Metro Detroit. It has also become a prominent host number of community events in the last year, such as Art Bomb, Fight Like a Jedi fundraisers, Intuitive Art workshops and this weekend’s Zombie Run.

“This location has allowed us to do much more with brewing and events. It’s not just the pub. The pub has really become a visual representation of what we can do,” explained Right Brain’s branding, events and marketing coordinator Leif Kolt.

A free family-friendly event, SoForever showcased much of what Kolt referred to. Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan set up a flea market, local bands were playing throughout the day and face painting was available for kids. Back in the brewhouse, you could enjoy a free brewery tour highlighting ingredients and processes used in brewing Right Brain beer.

There were also fun brewery games, including keg bowling and keg tosses. You could even help yourself to free cake.

Celebrating Right Brain wouldn’t be complete without trying its latest inventive brew. Pig’s heads, pie, asparagus and now Detroit beets have been used to create food-inspired brews. An ode to a great comedic character, the Schrute Farms beet saison is the brewery’s latest creation and is something everyone should try.

With great success this year, what’s in store for year two in SoFo?

“I would really like to open up the other half of the building,” answered Kolt. Opening up more space would allow Right Brain to increase their number of events and also expand the type of events they can host.

The brewery is also looking to finally upgrade its brewing capacity to a 15 barrel system and will be adding more brews to its canning lineup. Look for my favorite, CEO Stout, in cans in the coming weeks.
