LANSING, Mich.—Seven Michigan Brewers Guild member breweries were awarded a collective nine medals this past weekend at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) Competition, in Denver, Colorado—the largest commercial beer competition in the world and a symbol of brewing excellence, presented by the Brewers Association.

The Brewers Association (BA) awarded 306 medals to 280 breweries across the United States with award-winning breweries receiving prestigious gold, silver and bronze medals in 102 beer categories covering 167 different beer styles (including all subcategories), establishing the best examples of each style in the country and earning a symbol of brewing excellence. The Great American Beer Festival is the granddaddy of all U.S. beer festivals, offering the largest collection of U.S. beer ever assembled. The judging panel awards gold, silver or bronze medals that are recognized around the world as symbols of brewing excellence. These awards are among the most coveted in the industry and heralded by the winning brewers in their national advertising. Medal distinctions are as follows:

  • GOLD: A world-class beer that accurately exemplifies the specified style, displaying the proper balance of taste, aroma and appearance.
  • SILVER: An excellent beer that may vary slightly from style parameters while maintaining close adherence to the style and displaying excellent taste, aroma and appearance.
  • BRONZE: A fine example of the style that may vary slightly from style parameters and/or have minor deviations in taste, aroma or appearance.

In its GABF competition debut, the Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale style category was the most-entered with 391 entries. Since 2002, the most-entered category was American-Style India Pale Ale (IPA), which saw 311 entries in 2018.

YPSILANTI – Saturday’s ABC Brews Crews Homebrew Competition, held at the Corner Brewery, was the largest in the event’s six-year history, with nearly 400 beers, meads and ciders entered by more than 100 homebrewers from Ishpeming in the Upper Peninsula to Toledo, Ohio, and many points in between.

The Beer Judge Certification Program sanctioned event featured approximately 50 judges — including professional brewers, Certified Cicerones and fellow homebrewers — weighing in on brews in 28 different categories during a marathon all-day judging session preceding the awards ceremony at 6 p.m., which was attended by many of the entrants. (Three other judging sessions were held prior to the event due to the number of entries, up by around 70 from last year.)

The categories with the most entries included American Ale (39), Belgian and French Ale (33) and India Pale Ale (31), with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to winners in each category.

Joe Nielson of Berkley not only beat out 28 other entries to take the gold in the Specialty Beer category with his Rye IPA, but he also took Best of Show for beer. Roger Burns of the Ann Arbor Brewers Guild (AABG) won Best of Show for mead with his Cherry Bomb Melomel, a blend of Tupelo honey mead and Burns’s version of Heart of Darkness, a limited-edition melomel produced by Ken Schramm, fellow AABG member and author of “The Compleat Meadmaker.”

According to Burns, it was a challenge to try to replicate Schramm’s Heart of Darkness — made with sour cherries, black currants, red raspberries and Michigan honey — because of how Schramm produces it.

“Ken’s meads are world-renowned and start with the best ingredients, off his own land, in significant quantities,” he said. “I haven’t had the opportunity yet to grow my own fruit, but have tried to stay true to his methods of using whole fruit and the best honey.”

In a fun twist, Schramm was one of the judges who, along with a crew at Detroit’s B. Nektar Meadery, evaluated Cherry Bomb, awarding it a gold in its category and nominating it for Best of Show.

WESTLAND — Michigan craft brewers Shorts Brewing Company and Dark Horse Brewing Co. will face off in the first match of the inaugural Ashley’s Invitational Brewery Throwdown. The event, hosted at Ashley’s Bar and Grill in Westland, will feature eight Michigan breweries battling it out against each other, Jan. 4 through Apr. 4.

“This is the first such tournament of its kind,” said Ashley’s co-owner Jeff More. “Three rounds of head-to-head competition leading to a tournament champion. There have been individual matches and beer throwdowns but not a bracketed, multi-round brewery tournament that we could find.”

The first match begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4. Over 40 brewers were considered for the competition; Ashley’s chose eight as each having something special to bring to customers.

“Each brewer is a winner just by being good enough to get into the tournament. Brewers war chosen to compete based upon what they could bring to our guests,” said More.

In the first round each brewer must offer four different draft beers. First round matches occur each Wednesday in January. Winners go on to the second round in February and March where they have to offer six draft beers. The finals will be in April where each brewer must offer eight draft beers. Brewer representatives will be present at each round to answer guests’ questions about the beers.

“The purpose of the Throwdown is to have fun but also to educate our guests about the great beer now available,” said More.

With two locations in Ann Arbor and Westland, Ashley’s is known as “Michigan’s premier multi-tap.” Draft Magazine rated Ashley’s one of the 100 best beer bars in the country, and voters have voted Ashley’s as having the “Best Beer Selection” in WDIV’s “4 The Best” every year since 2007.
