Founders

Founders Brewing has released a preview of their 2018 Calendar. Check out the initial lineup!

Some notable changes of particular interest:

  • Breakfast Stout and Backwoods Bastard will be available year-round. Yep, that’s right, you won’t have to wait for either of these going forward! Well, sort of. Breakfast Stout will not go away and will continue through the New Year, while Backwoods Bastard will make its timeless debut in just a few months. Not bad!
  • It’s not indicated on this first availability calendar, but they will be offering Solid Gold, All Day IPARubaeus and all of their seasonal beers, which include Mosaic PromiseAzacca IPA and PC Pils, in 6-pack cans.
  • DOUBLE TROUBLE RETURNS! By popular demand, they’re delivering. This notorious Imperial IPA will make its return in May 2018.
  • They are launching the “Mothership Series,” a brand-new taproom carryout. These beers will range from classics like the inaugural release, Red’s Rye IPA, to experimental new styles. These will only be available for carryout in 6-pack bottles at the taproom locations.
  • Saying goodbye to some favorites, like Imperial Stout, Curmudgeon and reDANKulous although we’d like to think of it as ‘until we meet again.’ Because, let’s be real, Founders’ brings back old faves all the time!
  • Green Zebra was such a hit it’s coming back around. This gose-style ale, brewed with watermelon and sea salt, was named one of VinePair’s 50 best beers of 2017!
  • The Barrel-Aged Series returns and, with it, four new releases that we look forward to sharing with you in 2018.

founders breakfast stout It all started with an espresso bean. Over a decade ago, Dave Engbers, co-founder of Founders Brewing Co., was offered a chocolate-covered espresso bean while bartending at the Founders’ Taproom in Grand Rapids. Washing the bean down with a Founders Porter, Engbers decided to launch an experimental trial with beer, chocolate and coffee. The oats were added to the mix, and Breakfast Stout came together as arguably the most popular seasonal we make.

Named one of the top stouts in the world, Breakfast Stout starts with the best ingredients. Brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki uses a proprietary process to combine two types of imported chocolate, oats and a Colombian and Sumatra blend from Grand Rapids artisanal roaster, Ferris Coffee and Nut. The coffee lover’s consummate beer, Breakfast Stout has an intense fresh-roasted java nose topped with a frothy, cinnamon-colored head that goes forever.

Founders Breakfast Stout is a limited release available in 4-packs with a suggested retail price of $10.99 across our distribution footprint, launching in September through December.

7.5% ABV, Bottle

Appearance: Opaque dark brown, with a thick, tan, slow dissipating head.
Aroma: Bitter, roasty and chocolate notes.
Taste: Follows the aroma, with balanced notes of bitter coffee plus roasted and chocolate malts.
Mouthfeel: Medium-heavy bodied, chalky and dry up front with a smooth bittersweet finish.

“All I wanna do is drink beer for breakfast,” sang The Replacements, and had it existed back in the day, Espresso Love might have been top of the menu for Paul Westerberg and company. Arbor puts all the best breakfast foods together — 20 pounds of coffee from a local café, oatmeal, and dark malts — to deliver a smooth, extremely well balanced brew that is deceptively strong at 7.5% ABV, making it good as both a pick-me-up and a put-me-down.
