Detroit, Mich. —  Batch Brewing Company, located in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, is rolling out its first beer subscription called the Batch Brewing Company Expansion Pack. The Expansion Pack will include an exclusive 4-pack of beer per month, only available to subscribers. In addition, the subscription includes other perks such as the ability to prepay for bottle releases.

Batch Brewing Company is in the midst of growth, adding its second location ‘The Funk Room’ at 2841 E Grand Boulevard, where they recently started canning beer and expanding distribution. “Growing a small business is a balancing act,” says co-owner Stephen Roginson. “You’ve got to rely on subcontractors and vendors to honor their commitments, deliver on time, and care about your business.”

 

 

With a goal of opening The Funk Room, the brewery has found itself short of funding after a vendor vanished with a $95,000 equipment deposit. “We’re hoping the additional revenue from the Expansion Pack will help us bridge the financial gap and get our second tap room open to serving the North End and Milwaukee Junction communities,” added Roginson.

The first installment of the Expansion Pack will be available to subscribers in February as Batch Brewing Company celebrates its 4th anniversary. More information about the Expansion Pack can be found at their website.

Detroit, Mich. — From September 14 to September 16, Batch Brewing Company will be celebrating their 4th Oktoberfest since opening their doors in 2015.

While the brewery dons lederhosen and the requisite decorations, they also reassume their alter-ego as Batch Brauerei, focused entirely on the Oktoberfest experience. Throughout the weekend of celebration, Batch Brauerei’s beer menu will be entirely made of German-style beers, with the exception of their Feelgood Tap collaboration with Hatch Detroit ‘The GORGAntuan’.

batch brewingThe weekend will feature German-style food, as well, highlighting Chef Matt Johnson’s take on Oktoberfest fare, including half roasted chicken, cheese spatzle, and pretzels, among other items.

German music, food, and beer are all a part of Batch Brauerei’s Oktoberfest party, one of the highlights of the brewery’s year. Their Festbier is available on draft at the brewery, as well as in cans. The event is open to the public and free to attend, but a ticketed option exists, which includes a meal, 1L stein, a beer, and reserved seating. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.

Detroit, Mich. — Batch Brewing Company has debuted their September Feelgood Tap beer the ‘GORGAntuan’ as a fundraiser for Hatch Detroit and named in honor of founder Nick Gorga. The brewery will be contributing $2 from each glass of GORGAntuan sold to Hatch Detroit.

Hatch Detroit was established in 2011 to support the growth of independent retail in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park. One of the organization’s most recognized programs, its annual contest, introduces 10 aspiring entrepreneurs to the city, ultimately awarding one business with a $50k grant from Comerica Bank, and $200K in support services. In 2013, Batch Brewing Company won Hatch Detroit’s business incubator contest, and has since gone on to grow and expand, including their new facility ‘The Funk Room’ on East Grand Boulevard in the North End neighborhood.

feelgood tapThe fundraising concept was launched in 2015 at Batch Brewing Company. The Feelgood Tap has since gone on to become a 501c3, fundraising for nonprofits across Michigan through craft beer sales. More than 35 breweries, bars, and restaurants have partnered to raise money through the Feelgood Tap.

“The Feelgood Tap was a part of our business plan from early on,” said founder Stephen Roginson. “It was important to us that we were doing more than making beer and making money. The community has provided tremendous support to our business, and Hatch Detroit has been a big part of that. It’s our honor to pay that forward.”

The GORGAntuan is an Imperial IPA ringing in at 10% ABV. Medium-full bodied, smooth mouthfeel and notes of tropical fruit, candy sugar and pine. It will be available at Batch Brewing Company throughout the month of September.

LANSING, Mich.—Seven members of the Michigan Brewers Guild brought home a total of nine medals at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) Competition, in Denver, Colorado—the largest commercial beer competition in the world, presented by the Brewers Association.  Michigan-based Rockford Brewing Company was recognized as the “Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year”

In all, 293 medals were presented in 98 unique beer categories covering 161 different beer styles (including all subcategories). Winners were chosen out of 7,923 competition entries from 2,217 breweries in 50 states plus Washington, D.C. (a 15 percent and 24 percent increase respectively from the 7,301 entries and 1,783 breweries in 2016). The competition took place in six sessions over a period of three days and was judged by 276 beer experts from 13 countries, including the U.S.

Detroit, MI: Two breweries along the Detroit and Windsor riverfront, Batch Brewing Company (Detroit, MI, USA) and Motor Craft Ales (Windsor, ON, Canada), have released their latest collaboration beer, Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree. The rosemary and chestnut pale ale is brewed with Michigan malt and chestnuts. Motor City Malthouse’s German-style malt and Treeborn’s chestnuts are accompanied with a clean yeast profile, allowing the rosemary’s herbal and piney qualities to shine, while the chestnut sweetness provides depth to the beer.

The name of the beer, Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree, comes from the first part of the seventh chapter of George Orwell’s novel, 1984. It reads as;

“Under the spreading chestnut tree

I sold you and you sold me:

There lie they, and here lie we

Under the spreading chestnut tree.”

“The collaboration beer symbolizes a place where revolutionaries, patriots, and lovers of craft beer can come together,” said Stephen Roginson Owner of Batch Brewing Company. “No walls, only bridges and tunnels. No irony, only ideals and art.”

This is the second collaboration beer Batch Brewing Company and Motor Craft Ales have crafted and according to the owners of both breweries, there will be many more in the future.

“For us these collaboration beers really celebrate what our countries share, in terms of both beer and culture,” said Gino Gesuale, Owner of Motor Craft Ales.

 

Detroit, Mich — In the days leading up to Kalamazoo Beer Week, the Feelgood Tap, along with fundraising partner HopCat, are hosting the first ever Feelgood Tap Takeover. Ten breweries from throughout the state will each be featuring two different beers during the event, set to take place January 11th at the newest HopCat location in Kalamazoo.

“We’re both thrilled and grateful that HopCat was willing to host the event. They’ve been great partners since joining our efforts early in 2016,” said Stephen Roginson, founder of the Feelgood Tap, as well as Detroit brewery Batch Brewing Company. “This is a fun way to not only highlight the great beer being made by our partners, but to generate more awareness about the Feelgood Tap and its mission.”

This month, the Feelgood Tap is raising money for THAW, The Heat and Warmth Fund. Every establishment’s Feelgood Tap contribution will go towards helping THAW provide utility assistance for Michigan residents in need.

Shortly after Batch Brewing Company won Hatch Detroit and opened its doors in 2015, it started an in-house initiative called the Feelgood Tap, where they partnered with a different nonprofit every month, contributing a portion of sales from one specific beer for the month. Less than a year after beginning the initiative, they made the Feelgood Tap a 501c3, allowing other breweries, bars, and restaurants to participate, helping to grow the fundraising efforts.

Zwanze Day is a fictitious holiday created by Jean Van Roy, owner and brewmaster of Brasserie Cantillon. His intention is to celebrate and honor the playful spirit of the people of the Flanders region in Belgium, where the word “zwanze” describes a good-natured type of humor.
Each year Van Roy blends a batch of a special lambic creation and bestows a keg of it upon locations deemed suitable. There may be no better place on earth for such an honor than Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales in Dexter, where whimsy is an ingredient in each brew.


This year, only 60 locations throughout the world were chosen to participate. Each one tapped their keg simultaneously, coinciding with Cantillon’s tapping in Brussels which equated to 3 p.m. in our Eastern Time Zone. A toast was made with Ron and Laurie Jeffries, the duo driving the success of the hosting business. It was the first time any place in Michigan had been given the opportunity to host the event. With some luck it won’t be the last, but not all event sites are chosen for repeats in subsequent years.
Perhaps the outstanding efforts of the staff of Jolly Pumpkin, and distributor Mike Turriff of M4 CIC, will be rewarded again. They curated a world-class festival unlike any other location fortunate enough to land a celebratory keg. The brewery grounds hosted a nearly full capacity crowd, in spite of some unexpected backlash over the price of admission. Aficionados who were willing and able to invest in attending had access to over 50 beers from more than 20 breweries rarely, if ever, found in Michigan.

Good weather held out in spite of the dark clouds on the skyline and occasional threatening rumbles of thunder. Smiles and good attitudes were found all around. “I think it’s probably one of the most well run beer fests I’ve been to, with a great low-key crowd,” said Courtney Satko. She decided to attend after weighing the financial cost of her ticket with the benefits, ultimately figuring the proceeds being given to the Feelgood Tap project was worth it as much as the beer selection was.jolly pumpkin

It began in-house at Batch Brewing Company in March 2015 as a partnership with the Multiple Sclerosis Society to do work that was near and dear to Roginson, a founder of Batch, whose mother battles MS. Since receiving their 501(c)(3) status less than one year ago, the project has evolved to support a different cause each month and has attracted involvement from nearly 30 establishments that host a dedicated tap. “This is the first time that we’ve partnered on an event,” said Roginson. The charity’s recipient for the month of October, including Zwanze Day, will be the Michigan Humane Society.
According to Cantillon’s van Roy, this year’s Zwanze beer is a two-year-old Lambic aged on a mix of 82% raspberries, 18% blueberries, and .05% bourbon vanilla beans at a rate of 300 grams of fruit per liter. That’s approximately 10.5 ounces of fruit in 32 ounces of Lambic when converted to American standard measurements, a generous and expensive endeavor that resulted in a luscious deep pink beer that pleased the palates of guests.
Laurie Jeffries, Brewery Director at Jolly Pumpkin, said her husband Ron “mentioned to Shelton Brothers a few years ago that it’d be really cool to get a Zwanze Day, and he just put it out to the universe. We got notification earlier this year that there was a possibility; that we were on the list.” In August they were notified they were definitely a selected location, but it wasn’t clear there would be enough beer to send a keg until a few weeks before the big event. Luckily it was allocated to them and arrived along with four more of Cantillon’s coveted beers.

Ron Jeffries, whose title at Jolly Pumpkin is Chief Squeegee Operator/Brewer, can’t recall when he had his first Cantillon, but remembers it was not at all what he was expecting. Eventually he met Jean Van Roy at a Shelton Brothers festival and “was so starstruck I couldn’t talk. I could barely smile, swallow, and nod. Seeing him blending last year (at the festival), I was literally blown away by his blending skills and palate. I blend beers almost every day and was just floored. He’s a master, without a doubt. For him to choose us as one of the 60 places in the world to serve this special Zwanze beer is a huge honor for me personally,” he said.
Similar to Ron Jeffries’ respect for Jean Van Roy, Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company founder Jonathan Buford expressed his admiration for Jeffries. “Ron’s cool and Ron likes us, and you run with that when Ron likes you! You just do. It’s like the cheerleader in high school you don’t know why she likes you but you’re gonna like her back. If she invites you to a party you go with her,” he quipped when explaining their long trek from Gilbert, half an hour southeast of Phoenix. The two also met at a Shelton Brothers festival, but it wasn’t until a second encounter at Anchorage Brewing Company‘s Culmination event that they bonded. Patrick Ware, partner and brewer, said it happened when Buford blurted out “I hope I never see you again” to Jeffries as they parted and instead of being offended he turned around and told him it was one of the funniest things he had ever heard. Buford admits he doesn’t know where the idea to say that came from but he’s glad it happened. “He appreciates people who don’t take this too seriously, like him,” he speculated.

Revelry Brewing Company of Charleston, South Carolina is setting their sights on eventually producing enough beer to distribute in Michigan. For Jay Daratony, Revelry’s “janitor”, participating in Zwanze Day at Jolly Pumpkin was a homecoming of sorts. He’s originally from Dexter and still has family in the area.
Head brewer Ryan Coker spoke about their new barrel cellar coming online soon with up to 300 barrels and 12 foeders that will hopefully increase production to a point where they can share it here.

“We want to do it (distribute) in the right pockets I guess so to speak, put it in the right hands,” he said, implying Michigan beer lovers are capable of appreciating it.
The Revelry crew enjoyed their visit for Zwanze Day. Coker joked “What’s cool about Dexter is I had a checklist and it was to catch a fish, ride a horse, shoot a gun, and drive a four-wheeler, and I checked all the boxes today and still made it to the beer fest on time!” Sean Fleming, a Revelry partner, added “This is fun, it’s a total honor for us.”
That’s a sentiment shared by nearly everyone who was fortunate enough to be present for the first of what many hope will become an annual tradition in Dexter.
