delta series

News series is inspired by the local brewing history

ESCANABA, Mich. – Upper Hand Brewery is proud to announce the upcoming release of its Delta Series, six beers inspired by the historical Delta Brewing Company.

The beers, which will be available in cans and on draft, are based on real brands and styles brewed by Delta Brewing Company in the City of Escanaba between 1933 and 1940.  The cans feature artistic elements from the original beer labels and descriptions based on newspaper advertisements found in the archives of the Delta County Historical Society.

“We have been inspired by the rich history of brewing in Escanaba since we opened Upper Hand in 2014,” said Upper Hand Brewery Director, Sam Reese.  “These Delta Brewing brands really captured a time and place that isn’t altogether unfamiliar today, and in a lot of ways, they accomplished what we have always tried to do from our onset, which is to establish the U.P. as an iconic place to both brew and enjoy great beer.”

“After digging through the archives at the Delta County Historical Society, we saw an opportunity to resurrect some of these prohibition-era styles and present them to a new audience of beer lovers using some old-world ingredients and methods we don’t usually explore.”

The first brand in the Delta Series, Peninsula Pride, ships throughout Delta, Alger, Schoolcraft, and Luce counties beginning June 15, 2020.  The remaining brands—including Pioneer Extra Pale, Arctic Club, Hunter Special, Buckingham Ale, and Old Delta Bock—will be released progressively through the end of the year.

Delta Brewing Company’s Victorian-style commercial building, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, is located at 1615 Ludington St. in downtown Escanaba.

ABOUT UPPER HAND BREWERY:

Upper Hand Brewery is a crew of hikers, campers, dog-walkers, anglers, hunters, bikers, and folks that just want to get out there. We believe that life’s mission is to do what you love, where you love, with the people you love. For us, that means brewing the best beer we can, in the best place on Earth: Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

We put a lot of thought into brewing beer that reflects what we love about where we live. We have the unique opportunity to try and capture an experience—a sense of place—in each and every beer, and we take it seriously. That’s not to say we don’t have a lot of fun. The U.P. is full of adventures and we love making beer that makes those adventures even better.

A little more about us: our founder—Larry Bell of Bell’s Brewery—had always dreamed of opening a brewery in the Upper Peninsula. Little clues of those dreams can be found in many of the classic Bell’s brands, which pay tribute to the U.P. in their names and label artwork. His dream became a reality when we broke ground on our 20-barrel brewhouse in 2013, and we haven’t looked back since.

lake life seltzer

Cranberry Lime and White Peach Honey debut as first flavors

Holland, Mich. — Michigan’s proximity to fresh water is no secret, even the state’s name derives from the Ojibwa word mishigamaa, meaning large lake. For many Michiganders, lake means life, and now New Holland Spirits has introduced a line of hard seltzers that reinforces that philosophy. Lake Life Seltzers arrive in Michigan this May with Cranberry Lime and White Peach Honey debuting as the first flavors.

Crushable and clean, the seltzers deliver a welcome switch up for when the palate needs a break from craft beer. Brand Manager Adam Dickerson believes the new products will fit perfectly into the coastal lifestyle.

“Lake Life embodies the idea of letting loose,” Dickerson said. “Unplugging from the daily grind to step back and enjoy the weekend, the day or even just a moment of carefree vibes.”

lake life seltzerMade with Lake Life Vodka and fruit flavors, the two new seltzers allow you to drink by the lake without the hassle of extra ingredients or supplies—a cooler and some ice will do. The house-distilled vodka is what truly separates this seltzer from the pack. Lake Life Vodka launched in 2019, inspired by Michigan’s West Coast and savored moments spent on the water. Flavorwise, the spirit is smooth and subtly sweet, providing the perfect base to build a seltzer upon.

Head Distiller Brad Kamphuis sees the utility of both the spirit and the seltzer in different situations.

“If you enjoy mixing yourself a drink, Lake Life vodka has you covered, but we are stoked to be able to offer the ease of a ready-made beverage with Lake Life Seltzers,” Kamphuis said. “Both recipes are refreshing, crisp and balanced with just the right amount of fruit flavor.”

The boon for those watching their beer bellies: Lake Life Seltzer contains just 80 calories and less than 1 gram of sugar. They’re a guilt-free alcoholic alternative and gluten free to boot.

Carefully crafted near the shores of Lake Michigan by New Holland Spirits in Holland, Lake Life reflects a connection between spirit and season.

“Whether you are relaxed in an adirondack chair, dipping your toes in the water or doing cannonball off the raft, these are the moments that we look forward to all year,” Dickerson said.

This summer, pair these moments with Lake Life and let’s coast.

About New Holland Spirits
In early 2002, New Holland Brewing Co-Founder & President, Brett VanderKamp visited the Caribbean with the intention of enjoying sun, sand and waves. Instead, he found world-class rum, and a lifelong obsession with fine craft spirits was born. He returned to Holland, MI with a mission; to create spirits that live up to his artful way of life and to share them with the world. bottled in bond

Grand Rapids’ first craft distillery celebrates fifth anniversary with limited-edition whisky release

Grand Rapids, Michigan – Grand Rapids-based Long Road Distillers will celebrate their fifth anniversary this weekend with a limited release of a brand-new offering, Long Road Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon Whisky.

“Obviously, we never expected to celebrate our five-year anniversary under the circumstances we find ourselves in,” said Jon O’Connor, co-owner and co-founder of Long Road Distillers. “All of our locations are closed to dine-in service, and we’ve been producing more hand sanitizer over the past 8 weeks than craft spirits. We can’t throw the party this birthday deserves, but we’re grateful for the opportunity to still offer take-out service of spirits, cocktail kits and food.”

Unique environment aside, the distillery wanted to mark the anniversary with something special. The Bottled-In-Bond designation is a significant milestone in the life of a distillery, and carries with it certain requirements that go above and beyond the average bourbon.

bottled in bondA bottled-in-bond whisky must be distilled in a single distilling season for a single distillery, aged in a federally bonded warehouse for at least 4 years, and bottled at 100 proof. All these requirements were established by the Bottled-In-Bond Act of 1897. As the label on Long Road’s Bottled-In-Bond expression calls out, this bourbon is quite literally “Bottled-In-Bond Under U.S. Government Supervision”.

Only a single barrel of Long Road Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon will be available this week, less than 180 bottles in total.

Since Governor Whitmer issued an Executive Order on March 16 to shut down dining rooms of bars and restaurants, the team at Long Road Distillers has shifted gears to produce hand sanitizer and to offer take-out of Cocktail Kits, craft spirits, and more recently food from their Grand Rapids kitchen.

Orders for Long Road Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon and a variety of other spirits and kits can be placed through the Take-Out section of the company’s website www.LongRoadDistillers.com, and picked up at any of their three tasting room locations this weekend. A full list of days and hours of operation are available on the site.

About Long Road Distillers:

Long Road Distillers was born from the belief that making world-class spirits means never taking shortcuts along the way. After becoming the first craft distillery in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Long Road Distillers formed relationships with local farmers to bring that mission to Grand Rapids’ West Side neighborhood. Each spirit produced at Long Road Distillers is milled from locally sourced ingredients, fermented, and distilled on-site. The result is an uncompromised lineup of spirits including Vodka, Gin, Whisky and more. Their spirits, along with a handcrafted collection of cocktails and a wide variety of food can be enjoyed at their Grand Rapids and Grand Haven Tasting Rooms, and visitors can enjoy samples of their spirits and purchase merchandise and bottles to-go at their Boyne City Tasting Room.

day of the dragon

New Holland Brewing reveals three Dragon’s Milk Reserve varieties for its first online beer release

Holland, Mich. — New Holland Brewing Company has announced the return of its beloved imperial stout, Dragon’s Milk Triple Mash. Layers of chocolate, coffee and vanilla coalesce into a stout fit for Smaug himself, and at 17 percent ABV, this is a beast best savored. Triple Mash ages for one year in New Holland Spirits oak bourbon barrels, multiplying the Dragon’s Milk flavors to truly epic proportions.

In response to the pandemic, New Holland will implement its first ever online beer release, honoring Triple Mash with a virtual “Day of the Dragon.” While social distancing measures have transformed the way we connect with our favorite breweries, Dragon’s Milk Brand Manager Dominic Bergquist sees the bright side to this virtual release.

triple mash“Dragon’s Milk has always been about celebration and creating savored moments. The online release allows us to still get these awesome brews to our fans for them to enjoy at home and celebrate the arrival of summer, backyard bonfires and hopefully a s’more or two,” Bergquist said. “While we aren’t able to raise a glass together, this batch of Reserves is certainly worthy of a virtual ‘cheers.'”

Beer enthusiasts can place their orders on Saturday, May 16 beginning at 11 a.m. through 11 p.m. New Holland Mug Club members will receive an access code via email for early entrance, starting at 10:30 a.m. Drinkers can select their preferred location for pick up (Knickerbocker in Grand Rapids or Pub on 8th in Holland) which will begin starting on June 1st.

At $24.99 a 4-pack with a two case limit, payment will occur online at point of purchase followed by a confirmation email. Pick up of all orders begins Monday, June 1. Proxies will be allowed, but all individuals must present a copy of the order confirmation upon arrival at either New Holland Brewing location. Act fast, Triple Mash is only available for purchase on the order day only and it won’t see distribution outside of the pubs.

Two new Dragon’s Milk Reserve variants join Triple Mash for “Day of the Dragon”: Stroopwafel and Scotch Barrel Aged-Stout with Marshmallow & Dark Chocolate (2020 Reserve 2). The first finds inspiration from the classic Dutch cookie with rich caramel, vanilla, cinnamon and freshly roasted coffee beans. The second replicates campfire vibes.

“One of our favorite places to share a Dragon’s Milk is around the campfire, and this brew pays tribute to those legendary summer nights,” Bergquist said. “A blend of Highland and Speyside scotch barrels bring just a hint of peated smokiness that accentuates the roasted notes of our signature stout, while toasted marshmallow aroma and flavors set the stage for a rich, chocolatey finish.”

Both beers go online at the same time as Triple Mash for $17.99 a 4-pack with no limits. Stroopwafel will only be available at New Holland brewpubs while 2020 Reserve 2 will be distributed throughout the Dragon’s Milk footprint. Check out a limited amount of Dragon’s Milk merchandise on the web store too, including the 2020 edition of the Dragon’s Milk Triple Mash Teku glass for $15.

Production Manager Jason Salas expressed his pride in helping orchestrate this event. “We couldn’t be more excited about how these beers turned out,” Salas said. “It’s extremely difficult to produce just one Dragon’s Milk Reserve, but our brewing team rose to the challenge to bring all three of these to life.”

Let’s give this Dragon a warm welcome.
