5.8% ABV, Draft
Appearance: Opaque, dark brown with ruby highlights and a thin off-white head with mild retention and lacing.
Aroma: Toasted malt, caramel and chocolate notes. No perceptible hoppiness.
Taste: Toasty and sweet caramel malt flavors with notes of chocolate; lingering sweetness and slight toastiness in the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body, smooth and slightly creamy.
Owing to its location, Harper’s Restaurant & Brewpub in East Lansing obviously gears its beer offerings toward the college crowd. Practically speaking, this means overly sweet (to my palate, at least) brews and off-season taps like Hefe-Weizen in December. The rotating draft of Batch 131 Brown Ale is likewise not quite balanced between sweet and toasty malt flavors, but is a perfectly competent and drinkable take on an American brown ale.
