11.9% ABV, Bottle
Appearance: Malty brown with reddish hue. Sediment-filled with about a half inch of head.
Aroma: Huge nose full of maple syrup and bourbon. Big sweetness factor with the molasses.
Taste: Bourbon on the tongue at first sip. Sugary finish with another round of booze.
Mouthfeel: Medium and sweet body. A malty calmness in the middle of the beer.
Released in February 2012, Founders Curmudgeon’s Better Half is the third issue in the brewery’s Backstage Series. The sweetness makes this ale incredibly deceiving on the ABV front. The bourbon fades into the syrupiness and vice versa, making this well-balanced, high gravity old ale. Much like the aromatic qualities of the ale, the taste combination of syrup, bourbon and molasses are in your face (and mouth). Better Half’s harmonious elements make it a first rate contribution by Founders.
